Zion’s Engaging Sunday School Curriculium for Children
Sunday School Workshop Rotation model
Our Sunday School Workshop Rotation model derives from the Spark Curriculum. Spark has been designed by children’s education experts to accommodate all the different ways children learn about their faith. Some learn best through hands-on activities; others through writing and reading activities. Still others learn best through a combination of activities, and this is the approach Zion engages.
How it works…
The Sunday School team selects the Bible stories and three workshops for each story. Children read the story from the Spark Bible and study the lesson on the first week, then re-read the story and learn about it in new ways as they participate in workshops over the three following weeks.
The workshop rotation model is for children in Kindergarten to Grade 6 and is focused on a rich Bible story or group of Bible stories about particular characters. Workshop rotations include: Art, Bible Skills and Games, Cooking, Creative Drama, Science, and Video.
Children interact and engage with the Bible.
Children open the Bible and engage with God’s Word during each week’s study. Age-specific Bible goals set for each class help ensure children interact and engage with their Bibles in age appropriate ways.
K-1: Present ways for children to relate with Bible characters and put themselves in the Bible story.
Grades 2-3: Present ways for children to comprehend stories, identify with characters, and apply an action they can take in their own lives. Present ways for children to understand the structure of the Bible, and be able to navigate within the Bible to find stories they know or want to explore.
Grades 4-6: Present ways for children to know the Bible well enough to dig further into the stories, to interpret and determine ways to apply and compare Bible text to their own lives.
Praising, worshipping and learning of God’s love through music.
Complementing this engaging Sunday School experience, is Zion’s wonderful music program. The children’s choirs and youth ensembles at Zion are based on the Orff-Schulwerk approach instructed by highly regarded musician and teacher, Susan Swidnicki. Orff combines singing, percussion instruments (xylophones, glockenspiels, drums, etc.), movement, rhythmic speech and improvisation to teach music in a joyful, child friendly and creative way.
