Parish Nursing Program
Parish Nursing Program
Parish Nursing Program: A reminder that we are available after worship on the second and fourth Sunday of each month. We will be set up in the lounge, across from the sanctuary. We can check blood pressures, talk about general health issues, talk about home care services available for people who have limited mobility. What services are available through Medicare, Medicaid, most insurances? Do you know anyone who might be unsafe at home? Should they go to an assisted living facility or nursing home? Is there anyone you know who is homebound and could use a nursing visit? Let’s talk.

For Women: “The Lord is my strength and shield. I trust him with all my heart. He helps me, and my heart is filled with joy.” Psalm 28:7 NLT Women need to be specifically concerned about two risk factors. Depression is twice as common in women and doubles or triples the risk of heart disease over women without depression. The feelings of disinterest and hopelessness make living a healthy lifestyle difficult, especially when trying to remedy any weight gain. Menopause is the other risk factor because of the changes in hormone levels. Studies have shown that a decrease in estrogen may contribute to higher risk of heart attack but hormone replacement is not unconditionally recommended. Rather, lifestyle changes are encouraged to minimize the impact of menopause and decrease the risk of heart attack.

For Men: Jacob’s Journey (CD) IPNRC: St. Louis, MO, March 2009 Jacob’s Journey is an eight-week wellness program for men living with or seeking to prevent hypertension, developed by the IPNRC. Based on the Biblical story of Jacob, this program includes lesson plans, speaker ideas, bulletin blurbs, newsletter articles, e-mail messages, a poster, bulletin board, sign-up sheet, evaluation form - everything you need to make this program happen (except the men!). It is not meant to take the place of treatment by a physician, but offers additional help in making lifestyle changes that include walking/daily exercise, dietary changes, and finding ways to reduce the impact of stress on one’s life through prayer and other interventions. Fellowship is an important component of this program. If you have an interest in learning more about either of these programs, or becoming part of a small group to address these health issues, please contact your Parish Nurses, John Krehbiel or Ethel Olson at eolson943@gmail.com
