Hopefully we will begin to have more consistently sunny weather and we can start getting the east side of our property prepared for new plantings.  The small boxwood shrubs have been transplanted to the north side of the property (by the fence).  The area is being cleaned out and new dirt and mulch put in. Weed barrier cloth will be laid and a grass barrier placed around the area.

 We will then be ready to start planting new plants.  This is a big project that will require lots of volunteers.  Email me (Ronda Harrison) for information at  r.harrison29@comcast.net.  Thank you for your support!

              We are making changes to the building; one is to ensure our building is a Safe Haven for children and the other is for general maintenance and safety.

              Each congregation within the Rocky Mountain Synod is encouraged to become a Safe Haven for all people participating in its ministries.  In March, some of our leaders attended a Safe Haven workshop.  A Safe Haven is a place of security, safety, and protection from all harm and abuse.  There will be additional training and recommendations’ coming to ensure our church is a Safe Haven.  For now, the immediate need is to ensure all areas where children are, have the ability for constant monitoring and viewing.  We have twenty-six areas used for classrooms, etc. that do not meet the visual monitoring requirements.  The best solution for these areas is to add windows in the doors.  Therefore, council approved adding windows to doors for areas where children may be in our building.  This is the first step to ensure our church is a Safe Haven for all to experience the comfort of God’s love without the fear of harm.

The other change you will be seeing this summer is the replacement of carpeting throughout the church.  Duct tape has many uses and you may have noticed it appearing in various traffic areas throughout the building.  This has met immediate safety needs to ensure no one catches a toe on the frayed carpet but, of course, is not a long term solution.  Once our summer schedule starts, new carpeting will be installed for safety and general maintenance reasons.

The terms of five members of the council will expire this year. A nominating committee is currently working to provide a slate of nominees for election to the congregation council at the May 20, 2012 congregation meeting. ELCA Youth Gathering - July 17 to July 22, 2012
In less than 80 days, the youth from Zion, St Matthews, Elim, Our Saviour & Prince of Peace in Logan will be heading to New Orleans for the National ELCA Youth Gathering. Please keep them in your prayers.

May 20th, Planning Meeting 2 - 5 pm
All youth attending the YG in July please plan to meet at the church at 12:30 pm. We are going on a field trip to Elim in Ogden!! We will join Elim, St Matthews & Our Saviour in preparing for the trip in July. We will explore the meaning behind Ephesians 2:14-20 as well as what it means to be citizens with the saints. We will also be brainstorming our t-shirt design & our small gifts that we will be giving out to all the friends we will make in New Orleans. Parents, we will be back at the church by 5:00 pm.

Youth who want to explore the gifts of God has given them and learn how to use those gifts to serve the church and the world. The weekend is full of team building, leadership training, spiritual gift exploration and peer ministry moments.

Confirmation Intensive (June 24-29) Completed 6th-8th grades Cost $175
This camp was designed specifically for and by the congregations of the Rocky Mountain Synod. Campers will experience their faith in a unique, experiential way - they will meet the characters and live the stories. We received a special invitation; most congregations have to inform the camp a year in advance!

Rendezvous (June 24-29) Completed 9th-12th grades Cost $175
Jam-packed week with once-in-a-lifetime experiences. During the week, you will experience our low and high rope courses, hike the high altitude trails around Sky Ranch, spend a day serving others, and finish the week with an exhilarating rafting trip on the Poudre River. Campers sleep in tents and prepare meals over the fire.

New Orleans Youth Gathering July 18-22, 2012
The National Youth Gathering is approaching fast and we are so excited to attend the gathering with Megan White & Alex Hilse from St. Matthews. You may have seen Megan at the St Patty’s dinner singing with ZY Jam. Youth from Our Saviour & Elim Lutheran Churches will join us as well. In all, there will be 16 youth and 4 adults who head to this amazing event, being surrounded by thousands of fellow Lutherans.
We will be participating in activities that focus on discipleship, peacemaking & justice. The day of justice for our synod will be on Saturday when we head out into the community to work on a service project. We are getting more excited because we have just purchased our airline tickets and sent our deposit for the hotel rooms. We leave on Tuesday, July 17 at 5:15 pm and arrive in New Orleans at 9:30 pm. We return on Sunday at 10:05 am.

April 15th Training for YG in New Orleans
Youth and their parents need to attend a three-hour training on Sunday, April 15th from 2:00 to 5:00 pm at Zion. You will NOT be bored with the crew presenting! These guys are a BLAST! Kristen Baltrum & Linda Staats will be leading the discussions, with activities planned by Ben Larson (Rainbow Trail) and Andy Sprain (Sky Ranch). St. Patty’s Dinner Thank You
Thank you to everyone who attended the St Patty’s Dinner. We raised over $1,700 for the trip to the Youth Gathering in New Orleans and for other youth trips this summer. Thanks to the parents for their help, as well as all the contestants who participated in the Truth or Blarney game. Check out the pictures below!

Compassion Program
At Creation Fest, the Youth learned about Compassion International (www.compassion.com) and wanted to share the amazing stories that they heard from speakers who were children of the program. This year the Sunday School Program will be sponsoring 2 children from Haiti that the Youth have chosen. The monthly contribution from our Sunday School offerings will provide food & clean water, medical care, educational opportunities, and important life-skills training. Most important of all these children will hear about Jesus Christ and be encouraged to develop a lifelong relationship with God. We will be able to write to the children and read their responses. Thank you for your support in making a difference in another child’s life.

You have been a friend to this congregation and its pastor. You have preached and presided in our worship, graciously telling others how Zion is “a great and fun place to worship.” You have celebrated with us in wedding and anniversaries. On two occasions, you have spent the day in U.S. Immigration Court, standing by our pastor and his family, when they faced the prospect of removal.

The congregations of the Utah Conference of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, will host a special “Service of Thanksgiving” with Bishop Bjornberg on Thursday, May 10, at 7:00pm at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church. A dessert reception follows worship.

The congregations of the Utah Conference will receive a special offering for ELCA World Hunger Appeal to honor Bishop Bjornberg at the Service of Thanksgiving. Zion congregation will receive this special offering on Sunday, May 6. (Checks may be payable to Zion, with a note, “World Hunger/Bishop.”)

Please plan to attend this special worship. Thank you for your special offering and, if you are able, for providing a dessert donation for the reception.

May 6: Confirmation Sunday, Joyful NOIZ and ZY Jam will be performing during the 10:30 worship.

 May 13:  Sunday School has reserved this day to celebrate end of the year with parties during the SS hour.

Crossroads Urban Center needs for this month: May

Food of the Month: Once again - milk and juice, any kind, aany size.  Would anyone out there be intersted in doing a  “Drink Drive?” We continue to struggles keeping drinks on the shelves.

We are always in need of plastic grocery bags - Please put your donations into the blue bin at church.

Monday Market Sales at Crossroads Community Food Co-op offer a variety of fresh produce, frozen meat, and other locally produced items that are sold at prices 30-50% lower than the grocery store. Every Monday (except major holidays) from 3:30pm-6:30pm. Open to the public at 1726 South 700 West, SLC. Cash, credit, debit cards & Horizon food stamp cards are accepted.

CROSSROADS URBAN CENTER: Openings for volunteer receptionist: Thursdays 1-5pm, Fridays 1-5pm.
This involves sitting at the front desk and answering phones, greeting clients and talking with those resting in the lobby. You should be able to comfortably interact with a wide variety of people of varying cultures,
abilities and ages.

Pantry: Thursdays 9-1
This involves standing and some lifting. You would help by putting together orders, giving them to clients in the lobby, stocking shelves with food brought up from the basement in the dumbwaiter and helping donors unload
donations from their cars.

The letter carrier’s food drive is coming up on Saturday, May 12. Crossroads receives all of the food from the Expo Mart Post Office. All food must be transferred from the PO to Crossroads, sorted, boxed and stored in our building THAT AFTERNOON. In order to get this done we need about 100 volunteers to pull it off. The sign-up sheet is now posted for the 11th Annual Olivia Rose Memorial Golf Tournament, so please indicate your interest in the event that supports the Let Me Shine Christian Play & Preschool at Zion. The key dates to remember are Sunday, June 3, for the tournament (tee times begin at 1:15 p.m.) and Sunday, May 20, as the payment deadline.  The $45  fee covers 18 holes of golf with a cart, plus refreshments at Stansbury Park Golf Course, 20 minutes west of Salt Lake City. You’re encouraged to arrange your own foursome in the team “scramble” format, but individuals and twosomes always can be accommodated.  Please make checks payable to Let Me Shine.
