It was only a touch on the shoulder. Then, it happened again. This time it was a gentle rub - and, when I looked up, I received a warm and knowing smile.

It was the opening worship for pastors and rostered leaders at the synod’s annual theological convocation. I was seated in the front row - center aisle seat — singing a hymn during Holy Communion. As some returned to their place after receiving the piece of bread and a sip of wine, they stopped to touch me. With that simple gesture, worship went beyond “God and me.” The community’s presence reminded me that worship goes beyond my individual experience. I am connected (as I am fond of quoting C.K. Chesterton) “not as a pebble of sand in a box but as a branch to the vine.”

I wondered if this is the way it was for the leper in Mark’s gospel (1:40-45). According to Leviticus’ law, lepers had been declared unclean and were therefore “untouchable” and banished to life outside the community. But Jesus had compassion on him, and he touched the leper, making him clean and free to reenter the community. It was only a touch, but the lives of the leper and Jesus would never be the same.

This Sunday, I invite you to sit near the aisle. I hope you receive a caring and knowing touch. If you are unable to secure this choice seat, I hope you offer a caring touch as you return from the holy meal. It may only be a touch, but our lives may never be the same.

In and through Christ,

ASH WEDNESDAY WORSHIP
12:00 and 7:00 p.m.
Soup Supper at 6:00

Lent begins with a solemn call to fasting and repentance as we begin our journey to the baptismal promise of Easter. During Lent, the people of God will reflect on the meaning of their baptism into Christ’s death and resurrection. The sign of the cross etched upon our foreheads reminds us of our human mortality and frailty. What seems like an ending is really an invitation to make each day a new beginning, in which we are washed in God’s mercy and forgiveness.

MIDWEEK LENTEN WORSHIP
February 29 through March 28

Soup Supper at 6:00 p.m.
Worship 7:00 - 7:30 p.m.

In midweek worship, youth leaders will gather us into worship and lead in discussion of the evening’s theme. Worship concludes with Holy Communion.

“Your Nail” is this season’s theme, which is centered in the powerful word of Colossians 2:13b-14:
God has forgiven you all your sins:
Christ has utterly wiped out the damning evidence of broken laws and commandments, which always hung over our heads, and has completely annulled it by nailing it over His own head on the Cross.
And then, having disarmed all the power ranged against us,
He exposed them
+
shattered,
empty,
and
defeated,
+
in His final triumphant act.”

Plan to worship in Lent as we explore the meaning of Christ’s suffering and death for us.

Safe Haven
All congregational leaders and adults who work with children and youth are encouraged to attend Safe Haven Training on Saturday, February 25, at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, Taylorsville. Linda Staats, assistant to the bishop, will lead the training for congregations in the Utah Conference, ELCA. The workshop begins at 9:30 a.m. and concludes at 2:00.
Rocky Mountain Synod’s news release describing the Safe Haven Project.
“Because God calls us to be a cross+generational community of faith and because young people are the most important gifts God entrusts to us; all congregations, institutions and ministries of the Rocky Mountain Synod are asked (per Safe Haven Resolution #3, adopted at Rocky Mountain Synod Assembly 2010) to make a commitment to be a Safe Haven for all children, youth, the vulnerable, their families and caregivers.
Go to Safe Haven, Rocky Mountain Synod to find basic resources to assist our congregations with the process of developing guidelines that protect our children, youth, vulnerable elders, and those with special needs. Safe Haven guidelines also protect one’s staff, volunteers, and anyone who is called to care for others.
No one approach fits every congregation. Guidelines need to fit your unique context and reflect the needs of your specific congregation and community. “What does this mean for myself, this ministry and our congregation?” “What will my congregation look and act like if it is a Safe Haven?” These are critical questions you will begin to ask as your congregation begins this life-giving, life-protecting conversation and process.
All congregations who begin or complete the process of creating Safe Haven Guidelines and procedures for their congregation and its ministries will be recognized at the 2012 RMS Assembly.”
